{"id":19286,"date":"2021-06-22T15:38:09","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T15:38:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=19286"},"modified":"2026-04-23T18:20:24","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T21:20:24","slug":"cambodian-government-to-intercede-in-nagacorp-conflict-with-unions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/cambodian-government-to-intercede-in-nagacorp-conflict-with-unions","title":{"rendered":"Cambodian government to intercede in NagaCorp conflict with unions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A meeting between NagaCorp&#8217;s management and laid-off workers will be attended by the country\u2019s Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Cambodia.- NagaCorp was highly criticised by labour unions after it announced plans to reduce pay and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/nagacorp-confirms-cut-jobs-due-to-economic-crisis\">lay off employees<\/a><strong>\u00a0to improve cost efficiency<\/strong>\u00a0due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the government will intervene, with the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training mediating a<strong> meeting between the two parties<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting will also be attended by eight members of the<strong>&nbsp;\u201cLabor Rights Supported Union of Khmer Employees of NagaWorld\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>and two lawyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The union aims for NagaCorp to reverse its lay-off decision, to rehire some of those fired and to increase the\u00a0<strong>enhanced termination compensation<\/strong>\u00a0for those workers who have already accepted the employer\u2019s severance arrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NagaCorp previously said: \u201cWe believe that<strong>\u00a0it is important for the Group to maintain operational and financial flexibility\u00a0<\/strong>to ensure that it remains focused and efficient during this period.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo reduce the impact on our employees, the Company will<strong>&nbsp;provide affected employees with enhanced termination compensation<\/strong>&nbsp;over and above payments required by the applicable Cambodian laws to assist their transition into other career or business interests.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to an increase in Covid-19 cases in Cambodia,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/cambodia-nagaworld-closed-as-employees-test-positive-for-covid-19\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NagaWorld<\/a>&nbsp;<strong>temporarily suspended operations voluntarily on 2 March 2021<\/strong>. It has not reopened since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To&nbsp;<strong>minimise its cash expenditures<\/strong>, NagaCorp has taken a series of actions, including scaling back hotel and food and beverages operations, reducing payroll expenses by limiting staff on-site, and the closure of facilities to reduce utility expenditure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chhun Sokha<\/strong>, union vice president, has said&nbsp;<strong>more than 500 employees<\/strong>&nbsp;union leaders, activists and members have received layoff notices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sokha claimed&nbsp;<strong>NagaCorp\u2019s offer to provide the government with subsidies<\/strong>&nbsp;to help Cambodian people during the Covid-19 pandemic was \u201cfake\u201d.
