{"id":19071,"date":"2021-06-16T14:52:09","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T14:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=19071"},"modified":"2026-04-23T18:30:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T21:30:22","slug":"debate-over-dates-as-aaec-lawsuit-against-las-vegas-sands-resumes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/debate-over-dates-as-aaec-lawsuit-against-las-vegas-sands-resumes","title":{"rendered":"Debate over dates as AAEC lawsuit against Las Vegas Sands resumes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Asian American Entertainment Corporation&#8217;s (AAEC) US$12m lawsuite against Las Vegas Sands has resumed today after a delay of a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Macau.- The court showdown between <strong>Las Vegas Sands (LVS) and Asian American Entertainment Corporation (AAEC)\u00a0<\/strong>has resumed today, beginning with debate about\u00a0<strong>whether the US casino giant was still a partner\u00a0<\/strong>of AAEC when it partnered with Hong Kong\u2019s Galaxy Entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AAEC initiated the lawsuit in 2012, arguing that\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/lvs-president-gives-details-on-macau-projects\">Sands breached its contract<\/a>\u00a0for a\u00a0<strong>casino licence in Macau in 2002<\/strong>\u00a0when the US operator switched partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, according to Las Vegas Sands,<strong>\u00a0its partnership with AAEC ended before\u00a0<\/strong>the Macau government announced the results of its licence tender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its <strong>legal team stated that a letter that was sent to Macau\u2019s then chief executive<\/strong> Edmund Ho Hau Wah showing the casino had already ended its relationship with AAEC on January 15, 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Reuters,<strong>&nbsp;Marshall Hao\u2019s<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>AAEC is seeking damages calculated at around 70 per cent of Sands\u2019 Macau profits&nbsp;<\/strong>from 2004 to 2022.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On September 4 2019,<strong>\u00a0AAEC was allowed to increase its initial MOP3bn claim to MOP96.45bn (US$12bn) for lost profits from 2004 to 2018\u00a0<\/strong>while reserving its right to claim for lost profits up to 2022 in due course at the enforcement stage. LVS\u2019 appeal over this decision is still pending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/las-vegas-sands-and-aaec-legal-battle-delayed\">LVS<\/a>\u00a0requested a\u00a0<strong>postponement in September<\/strong>\u00a0last year due to the travel restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/sands-sells-las-vegas-properties-to-focus-on-asia\">Las Vegas Sands<\/a>\u00a0announced the sale of its world-famous Venetian casino in Las Vegas for US$6.25bn to focus on the Asian market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chairman and CEO Rob Goldstein said: \u201cAsia remains the backbone of this company and&nbsp;<strong>our developments in Macau and Singapore are the centre of our attention<\/strong>.
