NagaCorp is to lay off almost 600 employees amid criticism from unions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Cambodia.- Casino operator and developer\u00a0<\/strong>NagaCorp<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>has started to lay off part of its staff despite having reported\u00a0a net profit of US$102.3m and a gross profit of US$427m\u00a0<\/strong>in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Close to\u00a0600 employees will lose their positions,<\/strong> a move that has been highly criticised by unions but is not expected. In May, NagaCorp\u00a0announced a plan<\/a> to cut more than 1,300 jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the company, the\u00a0layoffs are necessary due to the ongoing closure of its casino, <\/strong>but, according to local media, workers claims the layoffs are designed to reduce union presence in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the Cambodianess newspaper,\u00a0Chhun Sokha<\/strong>, vice president of the NagaWorld Union, said\u00a0more than 500 employees<\/strong> union leaders, activists and members have received layoff notices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sokha also claimed that\u00a0NagaCorp’s offer to provide the government with subsidies<\/strong>\u00a0to help Cambodian people during the Covid-19 pandemic was “fake”. She said the company did nothing to help its workers keep their jobs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n She added\u00a0<\/strong>that those laid off include pregnant women\u00a0<\/strong>and recent mothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NagaWorld\u00a0<\/strong>reported a\u00a0<\/strong>99.4 per cent year-on-year increase in\u00a0average daily mass table<\/a>\u00a0game buy-ins in the first quarter of 2021.
