{"id":18570,"date":"2021-06-02T15:51:52","date_gmt":"2021-06-02T15:51:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=18570"},"modified":"2026-04-23T18:57:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T21:57:47","slug":"sands-china-and-galaxy-lead-macau-ggr-in-q1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/sands-china-and-galaxy-lead-macau-ggr-in-q1","title":{"rendered":"Sands China and Galaxy lead Macau GGR in Q1"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>According to analysts at financial services firm Deutsche Bank, Sands China and Galaxy together accounted for 45.3 per cent of Macau GGR in the first quarter of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Macau.-\u00a0<strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong>\u00a0has revealed\u00a0that <strong>GGR\u00a0<\/strong>in Macau in Q1 was driven largely by two of its biggest casino operator:\u00a0<strong>Sands China and Galaxy Entertainment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sands China and Galaxy Entertainment together contributed <strong>MOP23.6bn (US$2.9bn) to Macau&#8217;s GGR<\/strong>\u00a0between January and March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to analysts,<strong>\u00a0Sands China led the way, accounting for 24.1 per cent of the total market<\/strong>. Galaxy Entertainment accounted for 21.2 per cent of GGR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tribuna de Macau newspaper reported\u00a0<strong>Sands China revenue was up 2.7 percentage points\u00a0<\/strong>when compared to the previous three month period. Galaxy saw a decline of 0.7 percentage points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Melco Resorts &amp; Entertainment<\/strong>, which had topped the ranking for most of 2020, followed with 16.9 per cent. In fourth place, <strong>Wynn Macau\u00a0<\/strong>reported GGR of US$424m, 14.5 per cent of Macau&#8217;s total GGR. <strong>SJM\u00a0<\/strong>accounted for 11.7 per cent and MGM China 11.6 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for VIP results,\u00a0<strong>Galaxy Entertainment took 28.4 per cent of the market share<\/strong>, Sands 21.5 per cent and Wynn Resorts 18.9 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>mass-market results<\/strong>\u00a0were led by Sands at 25.1 per cent and Galaxy Entertainment at 18.3 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-ggr-up-24-3-in-may\">Macau&#8217;s GGR<\/a>\u00a0in May came in at <strong>MOP10.45bn (US$1.31bn)<\/strong>. That\u2019s an increase of 24.3 per cent from April, when\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-ggr-up-1-01-in-april\">GGR was MOP10.4bn (US$1.3bn)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GGR was <strong>up 492.2 per cent year-on-year<\/strong>, making May the\u00a0<strong>highest monthly revenue<\/strong>\u00a0since the Covid-19 pandemic started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aggregate&nbsp;<strong>casino GGR for the first five months of the year<\/strong>&nbsp;totals MOP42.49bn, up 29 per cent year-on-year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May\u2019s numbers were fueled by the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-received-165500-visitors-arrivals-over-labour-day-break\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Labour Day break<\/a>, when Macau\u2019s Public Security Police reported that&nbsp;<strong>165,500 tourists came to Macau<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sands China results for Q1<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Casino operator<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/sands-china-reports-revenue-of-us771m-for-q1\">Sands China Ltd\u00a0<\/a>has reported figures for the first quarter showing<strong>\u00a0net revenue of US$771m<\/strong>, a 5 per cent year-on-year decline compared to the first quarter of 2020 but a\u00a0<strong>15.1 per cent increase from US$675m in the fourth quarter of 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sands China saw <strong>property EBITDA of US$100m, up 49.3 per cent from the previous quarter<\/strong>\u00a0when the figure was US$47m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It reported a\u00a0<strong>net loss of US$213m<\/strong>, compared to a loss of US$166m in the same quarter in 2020, but\u00a0<strong>an improvement when compared to the US$246m loss reported in the fourth quarter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company reported an\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/sands-china-occupancy-reaches-90-over-labour-day-break\">occupancy rate of 90 per cent<\/a>\u00a0for the Labour Day break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sands China president, Wilfred Wong said that although there were fewer tourists than on previous holidays,<strong>&nbsp;people spent more and stayed longer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some&nbsp;<strong>165,500 tourists came to Macau&nbsp;<\/strong>during the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-received-165500-visitors-arrivals-over-labour-day-break\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Labour Day break<\/a>, with a peak of 44,000 arrivals on the first day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO)<\/strong>&nbsp;reported Macau an average occupancy rate of&nbsp;<strong>83.2 per cent<\/strong>&nbsp;for hotels and guest houses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to analysts at financial services firm Deutsche Bank, Sands China and Galaxy together accounted for 45.3 per cent of Macau GGR in the first quarter of the year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":18580,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Deutsche Bank analysts report Sands China and Galaxy Entertainment collectively accounted for 45.3% of Macau's Q1 GGR, with Sands China leading the overall market and mass-market segments.
