A report is expected <strong>by July 30<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrew Wallace recently said <strong>people spend around AU$25m on gambling every year<\/strong> &#8211; an amount equal to the construction of &#8220;about six Sunshine Coast University hospitals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March, Wallace said he had garnered\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/australian-banks-support-credit-card-ban-on-online-gambling\">support for a ban from the four largest banks in Australia<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8220;The high interest rates and a high chance of loss could result in\u00a0<strong>serious gambling-related harm<\/strong>\u00a0for many people and families in Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Queensland Liberal National politician showed<strong>\u00a0concern regarding the number of people who turned to online gambling during the Covid-19 <\/strong>countermeasures as a result of the temporary closure of casino venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/australian-gambling-companies-against-block-on-credit-cards\">credit card ban on online gambling<\/a> has been opposed by <strong>Responsible Wagering Australia (RWA)<\/strong>, an independent trade advocacy body for Australian\u2011licensed wagering providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RWA argued that there was&nbsp;<strong>no evidence for a link between problem gambling<\/strong>&nbsp;and the use of credit cards for online gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, last December, a survey from the<strong>\u00a0Australian Banking Association (ABA)<\/strong>\u00a0showed increasing concern over the risks of\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/rising-concerns-over-credit-card-gambling-in-australia\">credit card use for online gambling<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Every Customer Counts report was based on&nbsp;<strong>40 written submissions&nbsp;<\/strong>from betting operators, gambling counsellors, consumer advocates, academics and government agencies, along with<strong>&nbsp;813 individuals&nbsp;<\/strong>who responded to a short-form web survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report concluded that \u201cthe&nbsp;<strong>associated risks were considered to significantly outweigh any potential benefits for customers<\/strong>, especially for vulnerable populations.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A parliamentary committee will consider a possible ban on the use of credit cards for online gambling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":18307,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"A parliamentary committee in Australia is reviewing a proposed ban on credit card use for online gambling, a measure already in place for land-based casinos.
