The number of poker machines in the Northern Territory has risen more than two-fold since Lasseters Casino changed hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Australia.- Quilter Assets has sold its Lasseters Casino in Alice Springs, and the new owner has added 132 new pokies, more than doubling the casino’s number of slot machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quilter sold the casino to Iris Capital for AU$105m after operating the casino for 24 years. The\u00a0Lasseters casino now has 320 pokies<\/strong>, which makes Australia’s Northern Territory the state with the second-largest number of machines per resident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to local media,\u00a0the Northern Territory has nearly one machine for every 94 individuals<\/strong>. Only New South Wales surpasses the number, with one machine for every 88 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Current\u00a0laws do not require casinos\u00a0<\/strong>in the Northern Territory to\u00a0submit an application<\/strong>\u00a0for an\u00a0increase in the number of pokies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April, the\u00a0Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade\u00a0<\/strong>revealed\u00a0slot machine<\/a>\u00a0player losses had reached AU$25m (US$19.03m) in July 2020,<\/strong>\u00a0up 52 per cent year-on-year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although\u00a0other jurisdictions in Australia also reported increased player losses on slot machines<\/strong>, none were close to that of the Northern Territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However,\u00a0the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade (DITT)\u00a0<\/strong>said compliance officers in the Northern Territory have to complete compliance checks<\/strong>\u00a0regarding responsible gambling, gaming equipment and the conduct of gaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As regards other Australian states,\u00a0Tasmania has a slot machine for every 150 people<\/strong>\u00a0while the state of Victoria has one for every 228 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
