{"id":18052,"date":"2021-05-19T15:33:53","date_gmt":"2021-05-19T15:33:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=18052"},"modified":"2026-04-23T19:24:44","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T22:24:44","slug":"vcglr-criticises-crown-resorts-over-2019-ad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/vcglr-criticises-crown-resorts-over-2019-ad","title":{"rendered":"VCGLR criticises Crown Resorts over 2019 ad"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Victorian Commission for Gaming and Liquor Regulation has criticised Crown Resorts&#8217; board for signing an advertisement that attacked its investigation that revealed money laundering through its casinos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Australia.- The Victorian Commission for Gaming and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) has criticised <strong>an advertisement published in July 2019<\/strong>\u00a0by Crown Resorts&#8217; board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advert had <strong>attacked the VCGLR&#8217;s investigation <\/strong>of the circumstances around the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/victorias-royal-commission-to-examine-crown-staff-arrests-in-china\">arrest of 19 Crown executives in China<\/a>\u00a0in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Giving testimony at the Victorial Royal Commission into Crown Resorts, the VCGLR said <strong>the advertisement had been \u201chighly provocative\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0and \u201chighly inappropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>advertisement had been signed by all 11 Crown directors<\/strong>, including Crown\u2019s executive chairman, Helen Coonan, who later admitted the advertisement was inappropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the first day of the Royal Commission&#8217;s public hearings,\u00a0<strong>Timothy Bryant<\/strong>, a compliance officer at the VCGLR said\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/crown-lied-to-victorian-gaming-regulator-inquiry-hears\">Crown Resorts lied to him<\/a>\u00a0about the arrest of 19 Crown executives in China in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Bryant,\u00a0<strong>Crown Resorts failed to give correct information to the VCGLR\u00a0<\/strong>and delayed providing documents and reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Crown Resorts could open its Barangaroo casino by October<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In New South Wales, ILGA chairman<strong>\u00a0Philip Crawford<\/strong>\u00a0has said he thinks the opening of the<strong>\u00a0Barangaroo casino<\/strong>\u00a0may be possible <strong>towards the end of October<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crown Resorts has been ordered to pay\u00a0<strong>AU$12.5m to cover the cost of the ILGA&#8217;s inquiry\u00a0<\/strong>into Crown and must pay an annual Casino Supervisory Levy of AU$5m for fiscal years 2021 and 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Western Australia<\/strong>\u00a0is also carrying out a public inquiry to examine\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/wa-gambling-regulator-under-scrutiny-in-crown-resorts-probe\">Crown Resorts<\/a>\u2019 suitability to continue holding a casino gaming licence for Crown Perth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inquiry will also analyse how the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/wa-gambling-regulator-under-scrutiny-in-crown-resorts-probe\">Western Australian regulator carried out its duties<\/a>\u00a0concerning Crown\u2019s casino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first witness was&nbsp;<strong>Gaming and Wagering Commission (GWC) chair Duncan Ord<\/strong>, who admitted he had<strong>&nbsp;no formal training in casino regulation&nbsp;<\/strong>before assuming the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An<strong>\u00a0interim report is expected by June 30<\/strong>, with a final report with findings and recommendations due by November 14.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Victorian Commission for Gaming and Liquor Regulation has criticised Crown Resorts&#8217; board for signing an advertisement that attacked its investigation that revealed money laundering through its casinos.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":18063,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"The Victorian Commission for Gaming and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) has criticized Crown Resorts' board for an \"inappropriate\" advertisement attacking its money laundering investigation, while a compliance officer testified Crown lied about executive arrests.
