{"id":18043,"date":"2021-05-19T15:10:10","date_gmt":"2021-05-19T15:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=18043"},"modified":"2026-04-23T19:26:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T22:26:11","slug":"australia-cashless-gambling-proposal-gains-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/australia-cashless-gambling-proposal-gains-support","title":{"rendered":"Australia: cashless gambling proposal gains support"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Members of religious institutions and community service organisations have expressed their support for cashless gambling in New South Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Australia.- Religious and community groups have spoken in support of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/crown-resorts-to-implement-cashless-gambling\">Crown Resorts<\/a>&#8216; move to comply with New South Wales Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority\u2019s (ILGA) request that it it implement <strong>cashless casino gaming.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rev Simon Hansford<\/strong>, moderator of the Uniting Church Synod of NSW, and\u00a0<strong>Rev Stu Cameron<\/strong>, CEO and superintendent of Wesley Mission, have expressed their support for the <strong>cashless gambling\u00a0<\/strong>measure and its extension to other operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have discussed the topic with\u00a0<strong>Rev Tim Costello<\/strong>, chief advocate for the Alliance for Gambling Reform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cameron said: &#8220;A radical change such as this move towards cashless gambling could have<strong>\u00a0a considerable impact on people who are experiencing gambling harm<\/strong>, which is a significant number of people in NSW.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Costello said the\u00a0<strong>cashless gambling system should be linked to verified ID<\/strong> and to self-exclusion registers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also said it must include low load limits to ensure people regularly take breaks from gambling. He again called for a <strong>ban on credit card gambling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/crown-receives-acquisition-offer-from-the-star-entertainment\">Star Entertainment<\/a>, which has made a bid to buy Crown Resorts, has also agreed to\u00a0<strong>advance towards cashless gambling<\/strong>\u00a0to help tackle money laundering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move is expected to allow casino operators to <strong>stop working with junket operators<\/strong>\u00a0and to make their operations more transparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Responsible Wagering Australia against ban on credit card gambling<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Responsible Wagering Australia (RWA)<\/strong>, an independent trade advocacy body for Australian\u2011licensed wagering providers has responded against a proposal to&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/australian-gambling-companies-against-block-on-credit-cards\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ban credit card gambling<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The body argued that there was&nbsp;<strong>no evidence for a link between problem gambling<\/strong>&nbsp;and the use of credit cards for online gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ILGA had proposed a plan to introduce pre-paid gambling cards as\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/crown-resorts-officially-unsuitable-to-hold-casino-licence\"><strong>Patricia Bergin\u2019s report<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0into Crown Resorts\u2019 suitability to hold its Sydney casino licence, suggested that\u00a0<strong>\u201ccards would be a good system to combat money-laundering.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, that proposal was rejected by the National Party as it <strong>would affect pubs and clubs already impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of religious institutions and community service organisations have expressed their support for cashless gambling in New South Wales.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":18060,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Religious and community organizations in New South Wales, Australia, have voiced strong support for cashless gambling, particularly following Crown Resorts' commitment to implement such systems as requested by ILGA.
