The chair of Western Australia\u2019s Gaming and Wagering Commission (GWC) has told an inquiry he had no experience in casino regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Australia.- The Royal Commission examining\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0suitability of Crown Resorts<\/a>\u00a0to continue holding a casino gaming licence for Crown Perth has begun its hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inquiry also to analyse how the\u00a0GWC carried out its duties<\/a> in relation to Crown’s casino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first witness was\u00a0Gaming and Wagering Commission (GWC) chair Duncan Ord<\/strong>,\u00a0who admitted he had\u00a0no formal training in casino regulation\u00a0<\/strong>before assuming the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ord also made mention of Michael Connolly<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>Western Australia\u2019s former chief casino officer<\/a>,\u00a0who stepped down after revelations about his\u00a0social relationship with Crown staff.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Ord,\u00a0Connolly had previously notified the gambling regulator\u00a0<\/strong>that he had personal friendships with Crown Perth staff but it was only decided that he should step aside when the matter received media attention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ord also stated he did not seek any advice from any other members of the commission about the decision and said: “I believe that\u00a0it was appropriate to accept that<\/strong>, and in doing so, we were wanting to show we were ensuring the integrity of the Gaming and Wagering Commission.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state\u2019s Royal Commission is being led by\u00a0Neville Owen<\/strong>, who is joined by\u00a0Supreme Court judge Lindy Jenkins and former auditor-general Colin Murphy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An internal report is expected to be delivered by June 30<\/strong> and a final report by November 14.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
