Japan.- As the race for IR development in Japan continues,\u00a0Osaka<\/a>\u00a0is processing the potential challenges of a one-horse race as MGM-Orix<\/strong>\u00a0remains the\u00a0only contender\u00a0<\/strong>to become its private partner despite an extension of the deadline for submissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to local media,\u00a0Osaka’s authorities now fear they won’t be able to control the conditions<\/strong>\u00a0for the IR development plans for risk of MGM pulling out of the tender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Osaka government had asked\u00a0potential contenders to assume the costs of extending the Osaka Metro<\/strong>\u00a0line to the site. However, authorities are now afraid MGM-Orix could renegotiate conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same concerns are harboured over the planned meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) facilities as\u00a0Osaka wanted its operators to add MICE facilities\u00a0<\/strong>beyond the requirements of national legislation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the Nihon Keizai Shinbun newspaper, Osaka is also worried about the Covid-19 pandemic and the impact it could have <\/strong>as there are nearly twenty local companies related to the MGM-Orix consortium that are considering their position due to economic difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So far,\u00a0Nagasaki seems to be the city with the best chance<\/strong>\u00a0of gaining one of Japan’s planned three licences to\u00a0develop integrated resorts<\/a>. The prefecture has selected\u00a0three operators as potential partners<\/a>\u00a0for its bid.
