{"id":17470,"date":"2021-05-03T16:41:45","date_gmt":"2021-05-03T16:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=17470"},"modified":"2026-04-23T19:51:46","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T22:51:46","slug":"ladbrokes-accused-of-grooming-gambler-who-bet-a3m-in-company-funds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/ladbrokes-accused-of-grooming-gambler-who-bet-a3m-in-company-funds","title":{"rendered":"Ladbrokes accused of grooming gambler who bet A$3m in company funds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>British betting operator Ladbrokes has been accused of having &#8220;groomed&#8221; an Australian customer who went on to bet more than A$3m in company funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Australia.- <strong>Ladbrokes<\/strong> is facing a <strong>A$5.1m<\/strong> <strong>lawsuit <\/strong>that accuses the company of &#8220;grooming&#8221; a <strong>gambling addict <\/strong>who used his company credit card to bet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jaicome Spinella<\/strong>, who was in charge of finance at Melbourne-based concrete firm Bauen Concrete, deposited more than <strong>A$3m<\/strong> <strong>in company funds to his Ladbroke&#8217;s account <\/strong>in 571 deposits made with the company credit card between December 2016 and July 2017. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When his actions emerged in 2017, the company went into liquidation and 50 employees had to be let go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spinella, who ran the firm with his brother, cooperated with Australian authorities in their investigation. Last Monday, he pleaded guilty to a charge of dishonesty. He is due to be sentenced on Friday and will likely face prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Spinella is now suing Ladbrokes for not having offered him assistance with his gambling addiction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His lawyer, <strong>Nadia Kaddeche<\/strong>, claimed that internal emails between Ladbrokes staff read: <strong>\u201cgamblers as bad as Jaicome come along once in a lifetime, so make sure we keep him on.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judge Cahill said the emails made it seem the betting operator had &#8220;groomed&#8221; Spinella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8220;There does seem to be some level of interference &#8230; if not exploitation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It isn&#8217;t the first time Ladbrokes has faced regulatory problems in Australia.
