The Philippines.- The government has announced the extension of Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ)<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Metro Manila<\/strong>\u00a0until at least May 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision comes after the\u00a0Philippines recorded\u00a0<\/strong>8,276 new cases of\u00a0Covid-19 in the last 24 hours<\/strong>, and a total of 69,354 active cases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0MECQ<\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0originally planned to last until April 30<\/strong>, but Covid-19 cases continue to rise. Metro Manila casinos<\/a>\u00a0have announced that they\u00a0will remain closed until further notice<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysts at Nomura predict that the restrictions could be extended for two months<\/strong> because “two weeks are unlikely to sufficiently bring down cases and ease hospital occupancy rates to safer levels.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They noted that\u00a0the vaccination rate in The Philippines is very low<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They said: \u201cThe government reported that around\u00a02m doses have been administered<\/strong>, which is only about 0.9 per cent of the population and one of the lowest in the region (alongside Thailand).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
