China.- Officers from Yancheng city in Jiangsu province have arrested\u00a015 people for alleged involvement in an online gambling operation <\/strong>built on the EOS blockchain network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to media reports,\u00a0the police started to investigate the business in October 2020\u00a0<\/strong>while analysing millions of transactions associated with a gambling platform called Big game<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two months later, in December,\u00a0police conducted raids in different cities<\/strong>\u00a0and seized nearly US$3.8m in EOS and BTC digital currencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The police in Yancheng had previously targeted a business named PlusToken, seizing US$4.2bn<\/strong>\u00a0in BTC, Ether and EOS virtual coins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2020, the Chinese police investigated more than 17,000 cross-border gambling cases<\/a> and arrested 110,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year the\u00a0Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced it was going to add new overseas gambling destinations<\/a> to the country\u2019s blacklist\u00a0<\/strong>of destinations to which cross-border transfers are controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China tests development of virtual yuan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

China’s central bank is\u00a0testing a virtual yuan<\/strong>,\u00a0which would allow authorities to trace the movement of money as a way of fighting against money laundering and tax evasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macau and Hong Kong have been\u00a0selected by Chinese authorities to test the use of a virtual currency<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
