{"id":16946,"date":"2021-04-16T15:47:59","date_gmt":"2021-04-16T15:47:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=16946"},"modified":"2026-04-23T20:19:40","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T23:19:40","slug":"macau-could-reduce-non-resident-blue-card-holders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-could-reduce-non-resident-blue-card-holders","title":{"rendered":"Macau could reduce non-resident \u2018blue card\u2019 holders"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Macau government could take the decision soon if the unemployment rate continues rising amid a difficult economic situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Macau.- While analysts believe\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macaus-economy-to-rebound-by-53-per-cent-in-2021-analysts-say\">Macau\u2019s economy could rebound by 53 per cent this year<\/a>, the government is\u00a0<strong>watching the rising unemployment rate with concern\u00a0<\/strong>and is preparing to take action if the situation doesn&#8217;t improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Macau Labor Affairs Bureau&#8217;s (DSAL) deputy director,\u00a0<strong>the number of non-resident workers in Macau (blue-card holders) could be reduced<\/strong>\u00a0if the unemployment rate continues to rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>unemployment rate has reached 2.9 per cent<\/strong>, an increase of 0.2 per cent compared to the previous month, surpassing the 2009-2011 levels when the city was impacted by the global financial crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In December 2020, gaming operators reported\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/89-of-macau-casino-workers-are-local\">hiring 26,102 non-resident workers<\/a>, accounting for about 24 per cent of workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a bid to boost tourism, the\u00a0<strong>Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO)<\/strong> has\u00a0launched\u00a0<strong>subsidised staycations<\/strong>\u00a0for residents and is seeking to\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-considers-extending-tourism-incentives-to-rest-of-asia\">extend its incentive scheme for mainland Chinese tourists to other countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Macau government could take the decision soon if the unemployment rate continues rising amid a difficult economic situation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":16947,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Macau's government is considering reducing non-resident workers if the unemployment rate, currently at 2.9%, continues to rise, surpassing 2009-2011 levels.
