Macau.- Analysts suggest that the upcoming retendering of Macau’s casino licences is an opportunity to implement\u00a0changes to the licence<\/strong>\u00a0criteria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A research paper from Pedro Cortes<\/strong>, managing partner at law firm Rato, Ling, Lei & Cortes, and\u00a0Antonio Lobo Viela<\/strong>, an advisor on gaming-related matters, proposes to add requirements for operators to help the diversification of Macau’s economy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the analysts, Macau has a weak economy that is “excessively dependent on tourism and gaming,”<\/strong>\u00a0something that came starkly into view after during Covid-19 countermeasures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cortes and Lobo Viela think\u00a0the city\u2019s gaming licence criteria should require “commitments relating to several non-core activities<\/strong>\u00a0or investments on the part of the gaming businesses and corporate and social responsibility plans.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysts also suggest there should be a requirement for\u00a0proposals for investment in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA)\u00a0<\/strong>to create an international world-class tourism destination, recognising the uniqueness of Macau’s cultural and social resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A public consultation on the amendment of Macau\u2019s gaming law<\/a>\u00a0is likely to be launched after legislative elections on September 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Macau\u2019s current casino licences are due to expire in June 2022<\/a>, the city\u2019s gaming laws state that licences can be extended for up to five years<\/strong> from the original 20-year term.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
