{"id":15519,"date":"2021-03-05T15:15:18","date_gmt":"2021-03-05T15:15:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=15519"},"modified":"2026-04-23T21:20:43","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T00:20:43","slug":"crown-perth-licence-under-review-by-wa-royal-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/crown-perth-licence-under-review-by-wa-royal-commission","title":{"rendered":"Crown Perth licence under review by WA royal commission"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The government of Western Australia has announced a royal commission into Crown Resorts&#8217; suitability to hold a gaming licence in Perth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Australia.- The Western Australian government has finally announced a royal commission to <strong>examine the suitability of Crown Resorts<\/strong> to continue holding a casino gaming licence for Crown Perth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commission is expected to deliver an interim report <strong>by June 30 <\/strong>and a final report with <strong>findings and recommendations by November 14<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement comes after the <strong>Gaming and Wagering Commission of Western Australia<\/strong> (GWC) <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/royal-commission-to-probe-crown-melbourne-suitability\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>asked for an independent inquiry<\/strong><\/a><\/em> to be held into Crown Resorts following <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/crown-resorts-officially-unsuitable-to-hold-casino-licence\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>last month&#8217;s Bergin inquiry<\/strong><\/a><\/em> into the embattled casino operator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The royal commission will be <strong>run by three commissioners<\/strong>: former WA Supreme Court judges Lindy Jenkins and Neville Owen, and former WA auditor-general Colin Murphy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Racing and gaming minister <strong>Paul Papalia<\/strong> said: \u201cThe Commission will also closely examine the state\u2019s current regulatory framework, the functions of the Gaming and Wagering Commission and<strong> provide recommendations for enhancing future regulatory capabilities and effectiveness<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helen Coonan, Crown\u2019s executive chairman, said in a statement: &#8220;[The WA Royal Commission] will provide an opportunity for Crown to <strong>detail the reforms and changes <\/strong>to our business to deliver the highest standards of governance and compliance, and an organisational culture that meets community expectations.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Crown Resorts casino licences under review<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, former Supreme Court judge Patricia Bergin found <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/ilga-crown-resorts-unsuitable-to-operate-barangaroo-casino\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Crown unsuitable to hold its licence for its new Sydney casino<\/strong><\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The casino operator has since <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/crown-resorts-chair-commits-to-work-with-nsw-gaming-regulator\" target=\"_blank\">begun to make changes<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in a bid to gain the green light<strong> <\/strong>to open the Barangaroo venue by May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/another-crown-resorts-director-resigns\" target=\"_blank\">Six directors<\/a><\/em>,<\/strong> including former CEO and managing director Ken Barton, have stepped down from Crown Resorts\u2019 board folowing the inquiry conducted in New South Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Western Australia&#8217;s Gaming and Wagering Commission has<strong> <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/premium-player-activity-banned-at-crown-perth\" target=\"_blank\">prohibited Crown Perth from conducting any junket<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, premium or privileged player activity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government of Western Australia has announced a royal commission into Crown Resorts&#8217; suitability to hold a gaming licence in Perth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":15520,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"The Western Australian government has initiated a Royal Commission to assess Crown Resorts' suitability to retain its Crown Perth gaming license, following the critical Bergin inquiry in New South Wales.
