{"id":15473,"date":"2021-03-04T15:36:48","date_gmt":"2021-03-04T15:36:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=15473"},"modified":"2026-04-23T21:22:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T00:22:11","slug":"hayashi-may-not-seek-reelection-yokohama-ir-in-danger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/hayashi-may-not-seek-reelection-yokohama-ir-in-danger","title":{"rendered":"Hayashi may not seek reelection, Yokohama IR in danger?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Pro-IR Yokohama mayor Fumiko Hayashi may not run again when her third term ends in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Japan.- Yokohama&#8217;s IR plans may have hit another hurdle as it emerges that current mayor <strong>Fumiko Hayashi may not run for a fourth term in office<\/strong> at elections in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hayashi has been a<strong> firm proponent of an integrated resort in Yokohama<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, public opposition to the city&#8217;s plans have resulted in the emergence of an <strong>anti-IR candidate <\/strong>for the August mayoral elections in the form of <strong>Masataka Ota<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hayashi has not yet clarified whether she intends to run for reelection but there is speculation that she may be <strong>considering not to run because of health reasons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s leading to some concern over the future of Yokohama&#8217;s IR plans should Hayashi no longer be in power when the <strong>national IR applcation period begins in October<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Yokohama integrated resorts plans in doubt?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Opposition mayoral candidate, <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/who-is-yokohamas-anti-casino-mayoral-candidate\" target=\"_blank\">Masataka Ota, has promised to end Yokohama\u2019s IR plans<\/a><\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citizens\u2019 groups opposed to an integrated resort in the port city gathered 200,000 signatures to call for a referendum on the development but <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/yokohama-council-rejects-ir-referendum\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Fumiko Hayashi rejected<\/strong><\/a><\/em> it saying a referendum \u201cwould be pointless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Melco Resorts chairman and CEO Lawrence Ho recently said that the company <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/melco-still-hoping-for-an-ir-licence-in-japan\" target=\"_blank\">remains committed to seeking IR licence in Japan<\/a><\/em> <\/strong>but made no reference to Yokohama, since there is still no clear picture regarding the city\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pro-IR Yokohama mayor Fumiko Hayashi may not run again when her third term ends in August.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":15474,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Yokohama's Integrated Resort (IR) development faces significant uncertainty as pro-IR mayor Fumiko Hayashi may not seek re-election, coinciding with the emergence of an anti-IR candidate, Masataka Ota.
