{"id":14712,"date":"2021-02-15T15:18:42","date_gmt":"2021-02-15T15:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=14712"},"modified":"2026-04-23T21:50:01","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T00:50:01","slug":"india-kerala-must-decide-on-legality-of-online-gambling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/india-kerala-must-decide-on-legality-of-online-gambling","title":{"rendered":"India: Kerala must decide on legality of online gambling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The state&#8217;s high court has directed the government to make a decision on whether to outlaw online gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India.- The Kerala High Court has directed the state&#8217;s government to <strong>take a decision within two weeks on whether to include online gambling and betting within the purview of the Kerala Gaming Act<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>1960<\/strong> act bans gaming in a &#8220;common gaming house&#8221; but makes no mention of online gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court made the order after receiving a petition calling for online betting and gambling, particularly online rummy, to be declared illegal in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pauly Vadakkan, who introduced the petition, said online gaming platforms were a \u201cgrowing menace&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The petition states that &#8220;platforms that are even endorsed by<strong> celebrities attract their audience with false promise<\/strong>, easily making a fool of unsuspecting people.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vadakkan said: &#8220;Endorsements of online gaming platforms by celebrities such as<strong> Virat Kohli <\/strong>and<strong> Aju Varghese <\/strong>encouraged unsuspecting people to sign up for the games.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Indian states of <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/another-indian-state-could-ban-online-gambling\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Gujarat and Tamil Nadu have already introduced prohibitions on online gambling<\/strong><\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The state&#8217;s high court has directed the government to make a decision on whether to outlaw online gambling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"The Kerala High Court has directed the state government to determine within two weeks whether to incorporate online gambling, specifically online rummy, under the purview of the 1960 Kerala Gaming Act.
