{"id":13728,"date":"2021-01-25T21:56:24","date_gmt":"2021-01-25T21:56:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=13728"},"modified":"2026-04-23T22:24:57","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T01:24:57","slug":"lottery-sales-in-china-drop-20-8-in-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/lottery-sales-in-china-drop-20-8-in-2020","title":{"rendered":"Lottery sales in China drop 20.8% in 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All lottery sales were down in comparison to 2019 except for Keno sales, which increased despite the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China.- <strong>Lottery sales in China<\/strong> lost ground during the Covid-19 pandemic, falling by 20.8 per cent year-on-year to CNY333.95bn (US$51.52bn) last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/video-lottery-sales-plummet-in-china\" target=\"_blank\">Video lottery sales<\/a><\/em><\/strong> were most affected by the pandemic and the closure of betting outlets at the beginning of the year. Sales <strong>plummeted by 84.8 per cent<\/strong> year-on-year to just CNY679.3m (US$104.8m) in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Welfare Lottery sales<\/strong> were <strong>down 24.5 per cent <\/strong>at CNY144.48bn (US$22.3bn). <strong>Sports Lottery sales<\/strong> <strong>fell 17.9 per cent<\/strong> to CNY189.64bn (US$29.26bn).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sales of <strong>instant win games<\/strong> also fell, down <strong>2.1 per cent<\/strong> at CNY14.64bn (US$2.25bn).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only <strong>Keno sales increased<\/strong> year-on-year, reaching CNY910.9m (US$140.5m) 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">December as the strongest month for lottery sales in China but still saw sales down by 11.8 per cent year-on-year at CNY36.51bn (US$5.63bn).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>New limits on sports lotteries<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of 1 November 2020, every Chinese province, autonomous region or municipality can operate<strong> only one quick-draw <\/strong>for <strong>virtual sports lotteries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A joint notice from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the General Administration of Sport announced the restrictions on sales of quick-draw welfare lottery games and high-frequency sports lottery games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the 2021 annual Spring Festival holiday, all high-frequency quick-open games will be stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this context, some of the main operators in the sector are already looking into other businesses.<strong> 500.com<\/strong> is <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/500-com-to-acquire-bitcoin-mining-machines\" target=\"_blank\">investing heavily in cryptocurrency<\/a><\/em><\/strong> machines.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All lottery sales were down in comparison to 2019 except for Keno sales, which increased despite the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"China's lottery sector experienced a significant 20.8% year-on-year decline in 2020, primarily attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent operational closures, with video lottery sales most severely impacted.
