Citizens\u2019 groups opposed to an integrated resort in the port city had gathered 200,000 signatures to call for a referendum on the development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Japan.- The Yokohama City Council has rejected calls for a referendum to allow citizens to vote on the development of an integrated resort (IR) in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 200,000 people signed the petition<\/a><\/em><\/strong> calling for a public vote on this issue, more than three times the number required to request a referendum, but officials have voted against the possibilty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayor Hayashi Fumiko has been an advocate of having an IR in the port city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said: “I believe an integrated resort would greatly contribute to the city’s tax revenue by enhancing tourism.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November, Hayashi had suggested that she would accept a referendum, but she later changed her mind saying that discussions on the matter had been held in assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is up for reelection this year and needs backing from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. The opposition is also against holding a referendum on the city’s integrated resort bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city intends to present a bid<\/a><\/em><\/strong> for one of the three IR licences that Japan’s central government is set to issue in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has launched a Japanese-language Facebook page to promote its IR initiative to local people and also has a website setting out the benefits the project could bring to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Genting Singapore is one of the potential private partners that has already expressed interest in the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
