{"id":12746,"date":"2020-12-15T23:32:33","date_gmt":"2020-12-15T23:32:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=12746"},"modified":"2026-04-23T23:09:54","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T02:09:54","slug":"new-zealand-and-australia-agree-on-travel-bubble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/new-zealand-and-australia-agree-on-travel-bubble","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand and Australia agree on travel bubble"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Although some Australian regions were allowing New Zealanders to visit without quarantine, New Zealand had not yet reciprocated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Pacific.- Australia and New Zealand have finally agreed on the procedure to establish a mutual travel bubble that will begin in early 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As New Zealand has practically eliminated Covid-19 from its territory by shutting borders, many Australian regions have already been allowing New Zealanders in without quarantine requirements since October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Zealand did not reciprocate, and negotiations between the two countries on the proposed travel bubble have been ongoing for several months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the cabinet had agreed in principle to a trans-Tasman, quarantine-free travel bubble pending confirmation by Australia\u2019s cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ardern said that more work was needed to ensure safe travel and that New Zealand would move cautiously to finalise arrangements for the management of airline crews. She said a date for implementation could be expected around New Year after details are ironed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bubble is expected to commence during the first quarter of 2021, nearly a year after New Zealand locked down its borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia also closed its international borders early in the pandemic and apart from New Zealanders, still only allows entry to returning Australians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt told media the bubble was \u201cgood for the economy, good for our airlines and good for both countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the progress, casinos in New Zealand are not expecting to <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/skycity-expects-return-to-normal-operations-in-2022\" target=\"_blank\">return to normal activity by 2022.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, New Zealand struck its first pact on a reciprocal, quarantine-free travel bubble, agreeing to open up travel with the Cook Islands by March.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although some Australian regions were allowing New Zealanders to visit without quarantine, New Zealand had not yet reciprocated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":12748,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Australia and New Zealand have agreed in principle to establish a mutual quarantine-free travel bubble commencing in Q1 2021, following New Zealand's stringent border closures.
