{"id":11997,"date":"2020-11-21T15:05:18","date_gmt":"2020-11-21T15:05:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=11997"},"modified":"2026-04-23T23:53:39","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T02:53:39","slug":"another-state-in-india-bans-online-gambling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/another-state-in-india-bans-online-gambling","title":{"rendered":"Another state in India bans online gambling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tamil Nadu has made online gaming a punishable offence with promoters facing up to two years in jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>India.- The governor of Tamil Nadu, Banwarilal Purohit, has made good on his promise to ban online gambling in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new ordinance amends the Tamil Nadu Gaming act of 1930, the Chennai City Police Act 1888 and the Tamil Nadu District Police Act of 1859 to make online gambling a punishable offence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Online rummy and similar games now carry legal consequences that range from fines of Rs5,000 (US$64.45) to six months imprisonment for violators of the ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Promotors of games and online gambling platforms could be fined Rs 10,000 (US$135) or receive up to two years in jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The electronic transfer of funds for wagering and distribution of the winnings has also been banned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gambling is a state-regulated activity in India, and a fierce debate has begun over online gambling after a series of suicides related to gambling problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tamil Nadu Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said on social media recently that the government would pass <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/india-another-state-seeks-to-ban-online-gambling\" target=\"_blank\">new gambling legislation.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andhra Pradesh made such a decision <em><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/india-bans-online-gambling-in-andhra-pradesh\" target=\"_blank\">in September<\/a><\/strong><\/em> and recently blocked access to <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/andhra-pradesh-blocks-132-apps-and-websites\" target=\"_blank\">132 gaming websites<\/a><\/em><\/strong> and apps.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some jurisdictions, including Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha, have already banned real money card games.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tamil Nadu has made online gaming a punishable offence with promoters facing up to two years in jail.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":11999,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Tamil Nadu has enacted an ordinance banning online gambling, including rummy and similar games, making it a punishable offense with fines and imprisonment for both players and promoters.
