{"id":11518,"date":"2020-11-04T20:45:42","date_gmt":"2020-11-04T20:45:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=11518"},"modified":"2026-04-24T00:23:37","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T03:23:37","slug":"counsel-says-crown-resorts-unsuitable-for-licence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/counsel-says-crown-resorts-unsuitable-for-licence","title":{"rendered":"Counsel says Crown Resorts \u201cunsuitable\u201d for licence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The counsel assisting the NSW inquiry said the influence of shareholder James Packer was &#8220;harmful to the public interest.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Australia.-&nbsp;The New South Wales Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) hearing is taking opinion from experts before making a decision on whether to allow Crown Resorts to keep its licence for its AU$2.4bn (US$1.7bn)&nbsp;project&nbsp;in Sydney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Counsel assisting the inquiry, Adam Bell, said on Wednesday that evidence presented during the investigation meant Crown was &#8220;not suitable&#8221; to hold a licence for the new Barangaroo casino.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bell said Crown&#8217;s conduct surrounding the arrest of staff members in China in 2016 showed failures that persisted and that Crown and its main shareholder James Packer had a <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/packer-denies-knowledge-of-china-risks\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;high appetite&#8221; for risk<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bell said\u00d1 &#8220;Compounding the problem is no one who presided over the disastrous failures can provide a coherent explanation about how or why they occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s submitted that the impact of that influence put Crown Resorts in breach of its regulatory agreements with the&nbsp;authority.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The counsel said Packer&#8217;s involvement was \u201cultimately harmful to the public interest, which is a primary object of the Casino Control Act to protect.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, leading <strong><em>ILGA&#8217;s<\/em><\/strong> inquiry, is expected to deliver a decision on whether Crown Resorts can keep its casino licence on February1, 2021.
