{"id":11220,"date":"2020-10-26T22:23:14","date_gmt":"2020-10-26T22:23:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=11220"},"modified":"2026-04-24T00:39:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T03:39:21","slug":"australia-considers-bill-on-bets-with-stolen-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/australia-considers-bill-on-bets-with-stolen-money","title":{"rendered":"Australia considers bill on bets with stolen money"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The bill could force casinos to compensate victims of gambling fraud when a patron is found guilty of having placed bets with stolen funds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Australia.-\u00a0Independent member of Parliament Andrew Wilkie has introduced a bill that aims to make casinos liable for taking bets made with stolen money.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill entitled Making Gambling Businesses Accountable was introduced into the Federal Parliament stipulates that if a patron is found guilty of gambling with stolen property, the gambling operator should compensate the victim of the original crime.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If passed, it would be added as an amendment to Australia\u2019s Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilkie is backed by\u00a0the former financial adviser Gavin\u00a0Fineff, who is known in Australia for having stolen AU$8.4 million (US$5.6 million) from his clients to gamble. They are now jointly calling\u00a0for laws to force gambling companies to return stolen money to its original owner.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Wilkie, the move would\u00a0&#8220;prevent gambling companies from profiting from stolen money and enables the Federal Court to order a gambling company to return stolen money to victims.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MP wrote on his Twitter account: \u201cThis bill targets the unconscionable conduct of gambling companies, to ensure that all money they receive from gamblers has not been obtained at the misfortune of innocent parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe gambling companies were not innocent\u00a0here;\u00a0they engaged in predatory behaviour to keep Gavin gambling and dragged their feet on questioning where the millions were coming from.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He claims that <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/concerns-raised-over-nsw-cashless-pokies-plan\" target=\"_blank\">reducing gambling harm<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in Australia must also mean finding a solution for innocent victims of gambling fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cWe must have a mechanism in place to repair the damage that results from gambling addiction and protect the innocent. If you buy a stolen car you have to give it back.
