{"id":11146,"date":"2020-10-22T21:25:20","date_gmt":"2020-10-22T21:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=11146"},"modified":"2026-04-24T00:44:46","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T03:44:46","slug":"china-detects-us149bn-in-cross-border-gambling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/china-detects-us149bn-in-cross-border-gambling","title":{"rendered":"China detects US$149bn in cross-border gambling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A proposed amendment to criminalise the promotion of gambling is open for consultation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>China.-&nbsp;The Ministry of Public Security has reported its achievements in the first nine months of 2020 in its crusade against cross-border gambling operations.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From January to September the Ministry estimated that cross-border gambling funds reached 1CNY trillion (US$149.6 billion) although it did not clarify how much of that was prevented from exiting the country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 8,800 cases were investigated in the period and over 60,000 suspects were arrested. The Ministry said it dismantled&nbsp;1,400 cross-border gambling operations that were aided by payment platforms and underground banks.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ministry said its measures will be&nbsp;a \u201cstrong deterrent\u201d for any international gaming companies that target Chinese players.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of these initiatives, in August the Chinese authorities announced they will issue a blacklist of gambling destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also plan an amendment to China\u2019s criminal law, to <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/china-could-criminalise-promotion-of-overseas-casinos\" target=\"_blank\">criminalise the act of soliciting<\/a><\/em><\/strong> Chinese nationals to gamble or promoting gambling activities.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is expected to include possible jail sentences of between five and ten years, matching the penalty for running casinos in China.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The penalty for gambling would remain at three years of imprisonment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amendment was&nbsp;reviewed&nbsp;by the Standing Committee of China\u2019s National People\u2019s Congress last week and has become available for public consultation until November 19.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A proposed amendment to criminalise the promotion of gambling is open for consultation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":11148,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"China's Ministry of Public Security has intensified its crackdown on cross-border gambling, reporting 8,800 investigations, 60,000 arrests, and the dismantling of 1,400 operations involving CNY 1 trillion in funds.
