{"id":10424,"date":"2020-09-28T21:46:23","date_gmt":"2020-09-28T21:46:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=10424"},"modified":"2026-04-24T01:28:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T04:28:07","slug":"packer-insisted-on-crown-melco-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/packer-insisted-on-crown-melco-deal","title":{"rendered":"Packer insisted on Crown-Melco deal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my life and I\u2019m going to overrule you,\u201d the shareholder told director Michael Johnston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Australia.- The hearing into Crown Resorts has heard that the operator&#8217;s largest shareholder, James Packer, dismissed warnings from financial advisors about the sale of a 19.9 per cent stake to Lawrence Ho\u2019s Melco Resorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The New South Wales Liquor and Gaming Authority is conducting the hearings to decide whether Crown is fit to keep its casino licence for its AU$2.4 billion property currently under construction at Barangaroo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities have already heard about the <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/crown-suspends-junkets-until-june-2021\" target=\"_blank\">incident in 2016<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in which 19 Crown officials were found guilty of promoting gambling in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now they have seen text messages from financial adviser and Crown director, Michael Johnston, who warned Packer to wait for a further inquiry before striking a AU$1.8 billion (US$1.27 billion) deal with Melco for 19.9 per cent of the operator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advisors wanted to investigate whether Stanley Ho still had significant involvement in Melco Resorts, which would ban it from taking an interest in the Australian operator under the NSW government&#8217;s gaming licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To the text, Packer replied: &#8220;Sure, but, Mike, it is my life and I&#8217;m going to overrule you.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ho had a 20 per cent stake in Melco International, which owned a third of Melco Resorts.
