{"id":10144,"date":"2020-09-19T21:35:27","date_gmt":"2020-09-19T21:35:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=10144"},"modified":"2026-04-24T01:42:43","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T04:42:43","slug":"google-removes-indian-app-for-betting-violation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/google-removes-indian-app-for-betting-violation","title":{"rendered":"Google removes Indian app for betting violation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Paytm was reinstated in the Google Play store after removing is new online fantasy cricket tournament.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>India.- Google briefly removed a mayor local payments app from its online app store because of a fantasy sports feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It removed the Paytm app from the Google Play store just ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sports betting is illegal in India but fantasy sports betting is allowed because it is <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/fantasy-sports-betting-booms-in-india\" target=\"_blank\">considered a skill-based game<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, and the market is booming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong><em>IPL<\/em><\/strong> is India&#8217;s biggest sports competition and Paytm, the third most popular payments app in India after Google Pay and PhonePe, had launched a fantasy tournament with cash bets to coincide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The firm said in a release that the Paytm Cricket League \u201callows users to get player stickers after each transaction, collect them and receive Paytm Cashback.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was this that led Google to temporarily unlist the app from the Google Play store, arguing that it violated its policies on gambling in India.
