{"id":10019,"date":"2020-09-15T21:54:38","date_gmt":"2020-09-15T21:54:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=10019"},"modified":"2026-04-24T01:49:49","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T04:49:49","slug":"macau-recovery-still-below-expectations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-recovery-still-below-expectations","title":{"rendered":"Macau recovery still below expectations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The pace of Macau\u2019s recovery remains slower than that seen in such as Australia, South Korea or US territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Macau.-&nbsp;Visitation and gross gaming revenue (GGR) continue to recover in Macau but at a slower pace than in other Asia Pacific jurisdictions, a report from JP Morgan says.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GGR has reached\u00a0MOP$115 million per day, up from MOP$80 million in the first week of September, and visitation has gone from 8,000 people a day in August to <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-cautious-over-golden-week-expectations\" target=\"_blank\">15,000<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, according to the\u00a0Macau Government Tourism Office (<strong><em>MGTO<\/em><\/strong>).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JP Morgan analysts DS Kim, Derek Choi and Jeremy&nbsp;An&nbsp;said this is still below earlier expectations, which had aimed for daily GGR of&nbsp;MOP$200 million by this juncture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They now expect GGR in September to reach 20 per cent of 2019 levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s despite Zuhai&nbsp;and Guangdong provinces restarting the individual visit scheme (IVS) travellers usually use to enter Macau.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said:&nbsp;&#8220;The pace seems slower than what we\u2019ve seen in other re-opened jurisdictions such as Australia, Korea or US regionals, where local demand recovered to 70-100 per cent of pre-Covid-19 levels in a matter of a months.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The analysts&nbsp;attribute the trend to the new regulations from China that have tightened control over VIPs&#8217; funds, as well as Covid-19 testing requirements and slower visa processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said:&nbsp;\u201cWe\u2019d like to think that these are rather transitory and can be resolved gradually in the coming months, but we admit the visibility is low.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The pace of Macau\u2019s recovery remains slower than that seen in such as Australia, South Korea or US territories.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":10022,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Macau's gross gaming revenue (GGR) and visitation recovery continue to lag behind other Asia Pacific jurisdictions, despite the restart of the individual visit scheme (IVS).
