Proposal for national Australian gambling regulator on the agenda at Labour Party conference
Delegates are expected to push for the creation of a national gambling regulator as the Labour Party’s National Conference gets underway in Adelaide.
Australia.- Members of the Australian Labour Party intend to push proposals for the creation of a national gambling regulator at the party’s 50th National Conference, which starts in Adelaide today. A group of members continues to argue that the current state-based regulatory system has resulted in inconsistent rules and enforcement across jurisdictions.
The proposal is based on recommendations from the 2023 You Win Some, You Lose More parliamentary inquiry, which called for a national online gambling regulator responsible for licensing, regulation, and harm reduction. The report recommended funding the regulator through a levy on online wagering operators.
According to Australian media reports, discussions at the conference will consider whether to support the creation of a standalone regulator or to strengthen the powers of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), as proposed under the government’s current reforms.
The debate is expected to take place alongside discussions on other gambling measures, including restrictions on betting inducements, as delegates review and vote on the party’s policy platform for the coming years.
