Philippines: 501 arrested for illegal gambling
Police carry out 149 raids on 13 illegal gambling operators while the country is in lockdown due to Covid-19.
Philippines.- Police carried out 149 raids on 13 illegal gambling operations between March 18 to April 13.
The raids took place on Luzon Island, which is currently in lockdown to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The operations resulted in at least 501 individuals being arrested.
According to the Police Regional Office 5 (PRO-5) spokesperson, Police Major Malu Calubaquib, the province of Albay tops the list of the arrests with 220, followed by Sorsogon with 106, Camarines Norte with 79, Masbate with 62, Naga City with 19 and Catanduanes with 10.
Calubaquib said that 120 cases have already been been filed in court.
“PNP Bikol will continue its strengthened operations in the aim to curb Illegal gambling activities in the region in conformity with Executive Order No.13 signed by President Duterte,” Calubaquib said.
“It likewise, calls upon the community as well as the LGUs in eradicating illegal gambling and other prohibited games of chance where corruption breeds,” she added.
