The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp has donated PHP53.2m for the construction of modern sports facilities in the city of Maasin.

The Philippines.- The city of Maasin in Southern Leyte is to gain modern sports facilities to strengthen its sports development programme thanks to a donation from PAGCOR. The groundbreaking ceremony has been held for the centre, consisting of an oval track, tennis and basketball courts in Barangay Tam-is.

Maasin City mayor Nacional Mercado said the facilities will benefit the promotion of grassroots sports and the cultivation of local athletes to participate in national and international sports competitions.

He said: “We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to PAGCOR, most especially to Chairman and CEO Andrea Domingo for helping us realize our dream of having standard sports facilities in our city.”

PAGCOR chair Andrea Domingo added: “The only way for us to sustain the success of our athletes in the international sports scene is to provide them with modern facilities at the community level where they could train comfortably and competitively.”

A week ago, the regulator released an additional PHP80m for the construction of new multi-purpose evacuation centres and a permanent residential site in two towns in the province of Batangas. The first tranche of the PHP50m worth of MPEC, amounting to PHP25m was released in December 2021
