Older customers account for over 50% of Kangwon Land casino’s frequent visitors

The data has prompted a lawmaker to call for stronger measures to identify and prevent excessive gambling among older customers.

Key takeaways

  • People aged 60 and above accounted for 50.1 per cent of Kangwon Land’s frequent visitors between January 1 and September 15, 2026 and 41.5 per cent of total casino admissions.
  • Admissions by the age group increased by 36.6 per cent between 2022 and 2025.
  • Lawmaker Cha Kyu-keun has called for stronger gambling harm prevention measures, including closer monitoring of repeat visits.

South Korea.- People aged 60 and above accounted for half of the frequent visitors to South Korea’s Kangwon Land casino between January 1 and September 15, 2026, according to data released by lawmaker Cha Kyu-keun. The figures obtained from the casino operator showed that 6,304 of the 12,586 customers who visited on at least 30 separate days during the period were aged 60 or older, representing 50.1 per cent of frequent visitors. Of 2,437 people who visited the casino on at least 60 days, 1,172 were aged 60 and above.

The data showed that older customers were three times as likely as younger visitors to make at least 30 visits. Some 7.2 per cent of over 60s reached that threshold, compared with 2.4 per cent of those under 60.

The difference was particularly notable when compared with the casino’s overall customer base. Kangwon Land recorded 349,289 individual visitors during the period, including 87,533 people aged 60 or older. The older group therefore represented 25.1 per cent of all visitors but half of those who made at least 30 visits.

The figures also showed a sustained increase in casino admissions by older customers over the past three years. Admissions by people aged 60 and above rose from 711,659 in 2022 to 972,440 in 2025, an increase of 36.6 per cent. Their share of total admissions climbed from 34.2 per cent in 2022 to 34.7 per cent in 2023, 37.4 per cent in 2024 and 39.2 per cent in 2025.

By September 15, 2026, older customers had recorded 718,568 admissions, accounting for 41.5 per cent of the casino’s total. Unlike individual visitor figures, admissions count every entry, including repeat visits by the same person.

The findings have prompted Cha, a member of South Korea’s National Assembly, to call for stronger measures to identify and prevent excessive gambling among older customers. He urged Kangwon Land to introduce targeted interventions, including closer monitoring of repeat visits and referrals to professional counselling services for customers who need support.

Kangwon Land, located in Jeongseon County, is the only casino in South Korea where domestic residents are legally permitted to gamble.
