New Jersey pushes for eSports betting
Amid the expansion of the sports wagering industry, New Jersey is pushing a bill to approve eSports betting as well.
US.- The sports wagering industry continues to grow in the US, but it’s just starting. That’s why more and more possibilities are on the table for regulators and lawmakers nationwide.
In New Jersey, where PASPA met its downfall, eSports betting could be the next big thing. As the regular segment is already up and thriving, the fast-growing market is now under the radar of the authorities.
Assemblyman Ralph Caputo filed legislation Monday to expand the industry in the thriving eSports market.
“Esports is the next big thing when it comes to sporting events,” Caputo assured. The assemblyman chairs the Assembly Tourism, Gaming and the Arts Committee and is also a former Atlantic City casino executive. “With online sports betting now legal in our state and a rapidly expanding esports industry already in existence. The time is right for New Jersey to expand legal wagering beyond traditional sports.”
Esports betting could take advantage of “video game enthusiasts that are flocking to see expert players compete,” Caputo says. “Whether they follow along online or in person, hundreds of millions of people watch esports each year— and that number is only growing.”
