Myanmar calls for public support against online scams and illegal gambling
The appeal follows the arrest of 13 suspects and the seizure of equipment in Shan State.
Myanmar.- The government of Myanmar has urged the public to report online scams and illegal gambling as authorities step up efforts against criminal networks operating across the country’s border areas. The call follows an operation in northern Shan State that resulted in the arrest of 13 people suspected of involvement in online scamming and gambling activities.
Authorities said the 13 suspects were arrested on September 15. The operation followed information provided by local residents. Officials also seized equipment allegedly linked to the activities.
The government said criminal groups have entered Myanmar through border areas and established online operations targeting people both inside the country and abroad. It has also warned about the financial risks linked to illegal online gambling, including platforms that use bonuses and promises of quick profits to attract users.
Myanmar remains under scrutiny from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) over money laundering and terrorist financing risks. The FATF has highlighted the scale of fraud and cyber scams in the country and called for further action to address illicit financial flows.
