156 arrested in Myanmar online gambling raid

The raid resulted in the seizure of hundreds of phones, computers, laptops and other equipment used at the site.

Myanmar.- Authorities have detained 156 people and seized hundreds of electronic devices in a raid on an alleged illegal online gambling and scam operation in Kengtung Township, eastern Shan State in Myanmar. The operation was carried out at about 7am on Friday, August 7, after authorities received information about suspected online gambling and fraud activities at a compound near the Naung Lay Fish Pond Restaurant in Naung Lay Village, Kapha Village Tract.

Those arrested included 140 Chinese men, four Chinese women, one Lao woman, eight Myanmar men and three Myanmar women. Authorities also confiscated equipment, including 658 mobile phones, 134 all-in-one computers, 28 laptops, three Wi-Fi routers, 13 Starlink Gen-3 devices, 15 CPUs, five UPS units, two generators with capacities of 120 kVA and 155 kVA, a refrigerator and a freezer.

Police said the seized equipment would be processed in accordance with procedures. The operation coms as Myanmar makes efforts to disrupt online scam and gambling networks, with authorities working with neighbouring countries and international organisations.
