Police in Malacca, Malaysia, have reported that 862 raids were carried out to dismantle illegal gambling hubs last year.

Malaysia.- Melaka police raided a total of 862 illegal gambling hubs last year. Malacca police chief Datuk Abdul Maji said 260 of the raids involved unlicensed public lottery activities while 565 raids were carried out for illegal online gambling activities.

There were five raids at call centres, 11 at bookmakers, 18 on indoor gambling and three raids on open gambling.

Abdul Maji added: “A total of 96 premises carrying out unlicensed gambling activities had their electricity supplies cut last year.“

According to a statement released by the police, 1,047 people were arrested and 607 gaming devices, computers, mobile phones and cash together worth RM159,269 were seized. Abdul Maji said that this year 61 raids were carried out in January, 37 of them involving illegal online gambling activities. Some 70 individuals were arrested and police seized 40 mobile phones and RM9,005 in cash.
