Macau: fewer visitors than expected for CNY
The city received 62,984 visitors on the first five days of the Chinese New Year.
Macau.- Visitor numbers for Chinese New Year failed to reach Macau’s expectations, with just 62,894 visitors arriving between February 11 and February 15.
Macau had hoped to see at least 100,000 tourists visit the city during the Chinese New Year period.
Visitor numbers were down by 76 per cent year-on-year as the Chinese government recommended against travel. The best individual day was Monday, with 17,357 visitors were recorded.
The city received 47,770 visitors in the first four days of the holiday period.
However, Rutger Verschuren, the president of the Macau Hotel Association, said that the Chinese New Year holiday period showed signs of improvement for the sector when compared to previous months.
Most arrivals during CNY came via land, with 57,226 visitors rossing from mainland China.
