Indonesian army officer detained in online gambling raid

Reports of suspicious activity at the residence prompted soldiers and local authorities to conduct a raid.

Indonesia.- An army officer and 11 civilians have been detained following a raid on a suspected online gambling operation at a military housing complex in East Jakarta. The operation took place on October 4 at the Cijantung Army Housing Complex after reports of suspicious activity at the residence.

According to Army spokesperson Brigadier General Donny Pramono, the 11 civilians comprised six men and five women. Officers also seized 32 computers, 14 mobile phones and nine identity cards during the raid. Investigators suspect the computers were used to run the operation. The civilians and the seized items were handed over to military police for further investigation.

The army officer, identified as Lieutenant Colonel Arman, reportedly occupied the residence where the suspected gambling operation was uncovered. The Jaya Regional Military Police Command is investigating but it’s not been suggested that he was involved.

Army chief of staff General Maruli Simanjuntak said the military would take firm action against personnel found to be involved in illegal activities. The Army also reiterated that its facilities must not be used for unlawful purposes.

The development comes shortly after an Indonesian court sentenced 35 Indian nationals to prison for their involvement in an online gambling operation in Bali.
