Indonesia.- The Ministry of Agriculture has permanently dismissed 13 echelon officials following investigations into their involvement in online gambling. Indonesia’s agriculture minister Andi Amran Sulaiman announced the dismissals today after a leadership meeting.
The minister said reports about officials’ gambling activities had been verified before disciplinary action was taken. The investigation reportedly found substantial gambling-related transactions among those involved, with deposits by some officials approaching Rp200m (US$11,279).
Amran said civil servants were expected to uphold public service standards and act as examples to the wider community and that the ministry would not retain officials whose conduct breached its disciplinary requirements. He did not disclose the identities of those dismissed but said some had previously received guidance and warnings. He said the dismissals were separate from any corruption investigations involving ministry personnel.
The ministry has instructed the Inspectorate General and Secretariat General to fill the 13 vacant positions. Amran said the ministry’s workforce of about 52,000 employees means the dismissals would not affect the delivery of its services.
