India: 10 arrested for alleged cricket betting
Those arrested are accused of betting on an IPL cricket match between Gujrat Titans and Kings Eleven Punjab.
India.- Police have arrested 10 people in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Maharashtra, for alleged betting on an IPL cricket match between Gujrat Titans and Kings Eleven Punjab. Officers said a large-scale cricket betting syndicate was operating out of a flat in Wakad. During a raid, they seized cash and equipment worth ₹6.58 lakh. Two suspects escaped.
According to The Hindustan Times, a case has been registered at Wakad police station under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 4 and 5 of the Maharashtra Gambling Act. A report published by India Change Forum last year estimated that over 340 million Indians participate in betting on sport, including the IPL.
