Hong Kong World Cup illegal gambling arrests reach 991
Authorities raided 249 locations during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Hong Kong.- The number of arrests made for illegal gambling in Hong Kong during the FIFA World Cup has reached 991, police have said. Operations Crowbeak and Windshield carried out throughout June and July led to raids on 249 premises and the seizure of HK$365m (US$46.5m) in suspected betting records and HK$7.4m (US$942,000) in cash and assets.
Those arrested comprise 645 men and 346 women aged between 16 and 93. Police confiscated approximately HK$3m (US$382,000) in cash, valuables worth HK$4.4m (US$560,000) along with 43 computers and 443 mobile phones believed to have been used in illegal betting operations.
Alongside the enforcement campaign, authorities launched a public awareness campaign under the slogan “Stay Away from Illegal Gambling”. The campaign included online and media promotions, educational videos, posters and leaflets distributed at entertainment venues, as well as outreach activities conducted with schools, community groups and government departments.
