Chinese lottery sales show improvement

China’s national lottery has reported a month-on-month rise in sales for September.

China.- The national lottery has reported sales of CNY35.85 billion (US$5.35 billion) for September. That represents a fall of 1.5 per cent year-on-year but is 3.1 per cent higher than August.

The numbers have shown a slow recovery after having lottery revenue fell 41.7 per cent for the first six months of the year due to pandemic restrictions.

Sales for the first nine months of 2020 are now down just 27 per cent to CNY230.68 billion (US$34.43 billion).

China’s sports lottery has led the recovery, with September sales up 5.8 per cent year-on-year to CNY21.90 billion (US$3.27 billion). Sales of welfare lottery tickets were down by 11.1 per cent at CNY13.95 billion (US$2.08 billion).

The China Sports Lottery and China Welfare Lottery are the only fully legal forms of gambling in mainland China. Proceeds are intended for use in public welfare projects.
