Cebu City mayor orders police to intensify checks on gambling operations
The enforcement push will cover Small Town Lottery, Lotte, e-Sabong and cockfighting.
The Philippines.- Cebu City mayor Nestor Archival has ordered police to step up inspections of gambling operations and crack down on operators without the necessary permits or licences. The directive was issued during a briefing with the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), where Archival instructed the city’s 13 police stations to pay closer attention to gambling venues.
The checks will cover Small Town Lottery (STL), Lotte, e-Sabong, cockfighting and other similar activities. Officers are expected to examine permits, licences and other documents to determine whether the operations comply with the law.
Archival has also directed officers to ensure that cockfighting activities comply with Cebu City Ordinance No. 1447, as amended by Ordinance No. 2806. That includes rules related to licensing, permitted activities and restrictions concerning cockpit locations and distances.
The directive comes after Councillor Alvin Arcilla proposed that the City Council’s Committee on Laws, Ordinances and Styling to examine whether existing regulations allow cockfighting activities to be held during fiestas. The proposed review would clarify the legal status of permits and whether local authorities can authorise activities that are also subject to national gambling regulations.
