Cambodia considers broader visa-free access to revive tourism
The government is evaluating an expansion of its visa-free entry policy and additional international air links.
Cambodia.- A proposal for an expansion of Cambodia’s visa-free travel scheme was discussed during a government-private sector tourism working group meeting chaired by Tourism Minister Huot Hak on August 4. Around 150 participants representing government ministries, the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce, industry associations and tourism operators attended.
According to the Cambodia China Times, officials are assessing the possibility of extending visa exemptions beyond the current list of eligible countries while also encouraging airlines to open additional direct international routes. The intention would be to reverse falling international tourist arrivals and improve the sector’s competitiveness.
Cambodia recorded a steep decline in international arrivals this year, prompting concerns from government authorities and tourism industry representatives. During the meeting, stakeholders also evaluated existing tourism promotion initiatives and discussed new policies aimed at attracting visitors from key source markets. Industry representatives submitted 11 proposals.
The country already offers visa-free access to citizens of several ASEAN member states and maintains visa-on-arrival and e-visa programmes for many international travellers. Authorities believe that expanding visa exemptions could strengthen Cambodia’s appeal as a regional destination, particularly as neighbouring countries continue to introduce more flexible entry policies to compete for international tourism.
