The special committee studying the possible legalisation of integrated resorts in Thailand has suggested Bangkok could get a casino before less developed provinces.

Thailand.- According to local media reports, the government committee that is studying the legalisation of gambling in Thailand is considering allowing a casino in Bangkok before other areas. The committee has apparently suggested that Thailand’s first casino could be in Bangkok or surrounding areas due to the proximity to airports, road connections and hotel infrastructure.

Other possible locations would be popular tourist destinations near border provinces and immigration checkpoints.

The government, which has historically opposed gambling, is considering casinos due to the Covid-19 pandemic’s impact on the country’s economy and tourism. In December, an extraordinary House committee created five sub-committees to study the possible legalisation of gambling at integrated resorts in Thailand.

For now, gambling is illegal in Thailand other than through state lotteries and horseracing through the Bangkok Turf Club. Nonetheless, illegal gambling is widespread.
