Altenar & IBIA partnership: Strengthening sports betting integrity across Africa
Altenar has partnered with the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) to strengthen betting integrity and monitoring standards across rapidly expanding African markets.
Press release.- Africa’s betting market is entering a period of significant growth.
According to the International Betting Integrity Association’s 2025 Sports Betting Integrity Report, based on H2 Gambling Capital data, total GGR across Africa is projected to grow from US$3.5bn in 2021 to US$19.4bn by 2030, with online betting expected to reach US$16.4bn.
The market is already highly digital. GeoPoll’s 2026 research across Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda found that 95 per cent of bettors place their bets via mobile devices, while 67 per cent primarily bet on football.
As the market expands and becomes increasingly regulated and connected, protecting the integrity of sports and betting becomes an increasingly important part of sustainable growth. This is where Altenar’s partnership with the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) becomes particularly relevant.
Building stronger betting ecosystems together
IBIA is a global not-for-profit association focused on safeguarding sports betting integrity, with its membership representing more than 90 companies and 200 betting brands. Its Global Monitoring & Alert Platform monitors more than 1.5 million sporting events across 80+ sports and analyses customer activity across more than US$300bn in global betting turnover each year.
Through its monitoring, intelligence-sharing and collaboration with operators, regulators and sporting organisations, IBIA provides an important layer of protection for regulated betting markets. Its work is particularly relevant as markets become increasingly digital and interconnected, making cross-border cooperation and the sharing of information more important.
For Altenar, being part of IBIA means contributing to this wider industry effort while continuing to develop its sportsbook offering across African markets. Altenar combines a flexible sportsbook platform with local market knowledge, localisation capabilities and experience supporting operators with different regulatory and commercial requirements.
Strengthening Altenar’s approach to market integrity
Altenar’s membership of IBIA gives the company access to a wider network of betting operators and industry stakeholders focused on identifying and addressing integrity risks.
This is particularly valuable as Altenar expands across Africa, where regulated betting markets are developing at different speeds and cross-border collaboration is increasingly important.
Altenar’s membership of IBIA also reinforces its position as a trusted and reliable sportsbook technology provider, demonstrating its commitment to the integrity and long-term sustainability of the markets it serves.
The value of IBIA membership therefore goes beyond compliance. It is an opportunity to contribute to a more transparent and trusted betting environment, while bringing greater integrity awareness into the way the company supports its operator partners and develops its sportsbook offering.
Jacob Portelli, sales manager at Altenar, commented: “Africa is a market with significant potential, but sustainable growth depends on building trust alongside strong technology and commercial propositions. Integrity is a shared responsibility across the industry, and being part of IBIA gives Altenar the opportunity to contribute to that wider effort.
“We believe that combining our experience in sportsbook technology with the collective expertise of IBIA’s network can help support a stronger and more sustainable betting environment across Africa.”
Khalid Ali, IBIA’s CEO, said: “The African market provides both opportunities and challenges for the regulated sector. While there is great potential for market growth, the dangers from unregulated operators and match-fixers threaten to derail progress.
“The regulatory landscape has undoubtedly improved in many areas but is behind world-leading jurisdictions such as Ontario and Alberta on betting integrity measures.
“Altenar, as with all of our members, has demonstrated a clear commitment to investing in integrity monitoring and reporting and is working closely with IBIA to bridge that regulatory gap in Africa.”
Africa’s betting landscape is evolving rapidly, with mobile technology, football engagement and expanding online markets creating new opportunities for operators. At the same time, the development of mature and sustainable markets depends on maintaining confidence in the integrity of both sports and betting.
By combining sportsbook technology and local market expertise with international integrity standards and intelligence-sharing, Altenar aims to support operators as African betting markets enter their next stage of development.
