Arizona Department of Gaming names new racing division director
Shannon Nelson has been appointed to the position.
US.- Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) has named Shannon Nelson has been appointed the new racing division director. Nelson will also continue to serve as deputy director of regulation.
Nelson commented: “I am especially proud of the ADG staff, whose dedication, professionalism, and tireless work last season made the historic progress in safety possible and helped protect both human and equine athletes. As I step into this role, my focus is on strengthening the partnerships that have supported these results and continuing to advance a safe and successful season ahead.”
The ADG says that last season the state recorded its lowest equine fatality rate since it began tracking metrics. The regulator conducted pre-race and post-race veterinary examinations, monitored surface maintenance and testing, completed reviews, and enforced national standards under the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA).
Jackie Johnson, director of ADG, said: “This achievement demonstrates what is possible when regulators, industry partners, and racetrack staff work together, and reinforces the importance of strong, consistent regulation. When standards are clearly defined and fully enforced, we create safer conditions for horses, jockeys, and everyone involved in racing.”
The ADG announced $46.2m in tribal gaming contributions to the Arizona Benefits Fund for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026. That’s an approximate 5 per cent increase year-over-year.
