Canada.- An AI-generated Instagram advertisement has falsely used the family of Canadian soccer star Alphonso Davies to promote Oxibet, an offshore gambling site that is not licensed in Alberta. The campaign, posted by an account called Prime Spin Zone, showed a fabricated arrest of Davies’ father in Edmonton before claiming that cash found by the police came from gambling winnings.

A digitally created likeness of Canadian rapper Drake also appeared in the promotion, which redirected users to Oxibet, a gambling platform based in Comoros.

Regulated igaming in Alberta on July 13. As of September 17, 31 operators were registered in the province. Alberta’s regulated operators are subject to advertising requirements overseen by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC). Their marketing must display the Alberta iGaming Corporation logo and include responsible gambling information, while athletes and other people who appeal to minors cannot endorse gambling products unless the campaign promotes responsible gambling features.

Authorities have urged consumers to verify that an operator is registered before using an online gambling service. The AGLC maintains a list of registered operators and allows consumers to submit concerns about gambling advertising for review.
