This surge stands in <strong>stark contrast<\/strong> to <strong>Africa<\/strong> overall, where igaming fraud has fallen 14.7 per cent over the past two years, highlighting Ghana\u2019s diverging trajectory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sumsub<\/strong>, a global verification platform that uses AI-powered checks and biometric verification to prevent fraud and ensure compliance, highlighted that across all industries, Ghana\u2019s <strong>identity fraud rate<\/strong> climbed to 3.94 per cent in April to June 2025, nearly twice Africa\u2019s <strong>continental average<\/strong> of 2.27 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ghana\u2019s igaming sector remains under <strong>severe strain<\/strong> at the 5.76 per cent fraud level, posing a critical <strong>threat to operators<\/strong> and highlighting the urgent need for <strong>stronger verification<\/strong> and compliance measures, according to a Sumsub 2025 report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/09\/HANNES-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9451\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hannes Bezuidenhout of Sumsub warns that Ghana must act fast to stop fraud from spiralling out of control.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sumsub VP of Sales for Africa, Hannes Bezuidenhout, said, according to an EIN press release: \u201cGhana\u2019s numbers show a <strong>different trajectory<\/strong> from the continent. While Africa has demonstrated that investment in<strong> robust verification<\/strong> reduces fraud without slowing down growth, Ghana\u2019s experience highlights what happens when fraudsters move <strong>faster<\/strong> than <strong>compliance systems<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that this is a wake-up call for operators to \u201c<strong>close the gap<\/strong> with AI-driven solutions and continuous monitoring\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fraud tactics evolve<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, across Africa, fraud has been cut thanks to stronger verification processes and targeted investment in compliance technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regulatory pressure is intensifying across Africa, with South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya tightening rules to safeguard players and operators. For Ghana, the surge in fraud underscores the need for <strong>urgent action<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regional Business Development Director for North and West Africa at Sumsub, Richy Emah, said: \u201cVerification remains both Africa\u2019s strength and its challenge. Ghana\u2019s fraud dynamics demonstrate how urgent it is to build<strong> seamless, secure<\/strong> and locally adapted verification processes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report highlights<strong> evolving fraud tactics<\/strong>. Off-hour attacks are rising, deposit stages are increasingly targeted and AI-driven fraud, including deepfakes,<strong> jumped 700 per cent<\/strong> globally between 2024 and 2025. Experts recommend <strong>continuous verification<\/strong> throughout the player journey, alongside <strong>innovations <\/strong>like non-document verification and reusable KYC systems that reduce onboarding to just 25 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emah added: \u201cOperators in Ghana have a choice. They can continue to absorb rising fraud losses, or they can invest now in the kind of <strong>AI-powered fraud prevention systems<\/strong> that will not only protect their platforms but also unlock smoother experiences for genuine players.
