The event, which focused on regulatory compliance and public protection, brought together individuals responsible for running venues, often hotels, pubs or eateries, where LPMs are offered.

During the gathering, representatives from Goldrush and industry experts spoke about key laws and standards surrounding gambling operations. They emphasised the importance of the National Responsible Gambling Programme and the need for operators to promote responsible gambling practices and guide patrons when needed.

Participants also received training on compliance with multiple laws aimed at preserving public welfare, including the Legal Liquor Act, the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA) and the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

The training clarified the role of LPM site operators. Under South African law, LPMs are required to be owned and managed by licensed route operators. The machines are installed in licensed venues, such as pubs and restaurants, and are run by site operators who must ensure gambling isn’t their main business.

The facilitators also outlined operational best practices. For example, site operators must ensure adequate oversight of LPMs during opening hours, maintain proper machine placement for supervision, display responsible gambling signage and keep dispute logs when necessary. Guests under 18 must be excluded from LPM areas, with exclusion zones or barriers clearly marked.

Furthermore, attendees were encouraged to uphold the highest standards of integrity, follow data protection rules and keep a watchful eye on customers’ financial and emotional well-being.

The workshop underscores Goldrush’s effort to promote safer gambling across South Africa.
